The client

Naked Punch Review is an independent review of contemporary art and thought, publishing essays, interviews and poetry from South Asia and beyond. It grew out of “The Postanalytic Group”, a collective that met weekly in 2002, and is run by a large voluntary editorial collective of thinkers and artists around the world.

The challenge

Naked Punch has two lives: a respected print magazine with years of back issues, and a live publication that responds to current events. The website needed to serve both — a fast, readable home for new writing, and a proper archive for the print issues.

Above all it had to put reading first: long essays, clear sections, and nothing that gets in the way of the text.

What we built

A front page with a point of view

A bold masthead, a lead story, the latest posts and an Editor’s Choice — the website reads like the front of a magazine.

Seven colour-coded sections

Philosophy, Art, Politics, Poetry, Magazine, Interviews and Archives, each with its own colour so readers always know where they are.

The print archive, free online

A “Click to Read” magazine section where readers open past print issues by their covers — 13 issues and counting.

Built to grow

More than 300 articles organised by category, with archives that make older writing as easy to find as new pieces.

Readers who come back

A newsletter sign-up on the front page and Google Site Kit for understanding what readers come for.

Comfortable on any screen

A clean, Helvetica-based design that keeps long-form reading easy on phones and desktops alike.

Is this for you?

A good fit for magazines, journals, think tanks and writers’ collectives who want a serious reading experience online and a home for their print archive.
